Herts Brothers Vernis Martin–Style Vitrine Cabinet, New York, ca. 19th Century - A finely executed American gilt and painted display vitrine in the French Vernis Martin taste, produced by the esteemed New York firm Herts Brothers, retailers and interior decorators to Gilded Age elites. The shaped case is lavishly decorated with hand-painted pastoral scenes and cherubic figures in the Rococo Revival manner, framed by gilt foliate scrollwork and floral garlands. The serpentine glazed door opens to reveal glass shelving.The cabinet rests on elegant cabriole legs terminating in scrolling feet, and is crowned by a pierced crest with classical ornament. The original Herts Brothers retailer’s label is affixed to the verso, reading “Herts Brothers, Furniture Makers, Interior Decorators, Broadway and Twentieth St., New York, ” one of America’s most influential decorating firms of the late 19th century.
