Bidspirit auction | Period Country French Carved Walnut

Period Country French Carved Walnut Armoire, 18th Century - A period Country French walnut armoire, 18th century, exhibiting the warmth and sculptural charm characteristic of regional French country furniture. The molded cornice crowns a shaped frieze centered with carved foliate scrollwork, echoed in the paneled doors below. The two long doors feature raised and shaped panels framed by molded surrounds, with carved flourishes at the shoulders and lower rails. Below, a single full-width drawer is richly decorated with carved cartouches and lattice-ground motifs, fitted with period-style iron pulls and escutcheon. The apron is deeply carved with scrolling acanthus and shell elements, terminating in short cabriole legs. The proportions are notably slender at 18 inches deep, making this a practical and versatile storage form for modern interiors while retaining authentic 18th-century presence. Constructed in solid walnut with visible age, patina, and natural variation to the wood grain, the piece reflects provincial craftsmanship rather than courtly Parisian refinement, which adds to its rustic appeal and decorative authenticity. 90 in. H, 50 in. W, 18 in. D Condition: Consistent with age and use. Surface wear, minor edge losses, and scattered old marks throughout. Expected shrinkage lines and minor separations to panels. Hardware appears later but appropriate in character. Structurally sound and functional.
