Impressive English Chippendale High Chest of Drawers (Highboy), Mid-18th Century - Fine mid-18th century English Chippendale high chest of drawers crafted in richly figured walnut, displaying exceptional burl grain throughout the drawer fronts and upper case. The architectural broken-scroll swan-neck pediment is centered with a carved finial and flanked by floral rosettes, above a paneled frieze inset with a carved shell motif. The upper section fitted with graduated drawers retains original brasses of appropriate period form. The lower case features a long drawer over smaller drawers with a central carved shell and shaped apron, raised on elegant cabriole legs terminating in carved claw-and-ball feet. The proportions are refined and balanced, reflecting classic Georgian design sensibilities. The upper section surmounted by a dramatic swan-neck pediment terminating in carved rosettes, centered with a turned flame finial above a rectangular reserve inset with a deeply carved scallop shell motif. The case fitted with two short drawers over three long graduated drawers, each veneered in richly figured mahogany with pronounced burl figuring and framed by satinwood-style crossbanding and fine line inlay. Fluted quarter columns flank the upper case, lending strong vertical emphasis. The lower section features a long drawer above three smaller drawers, centered by a carved shell fan, above a shaped apron with additional carved shell ornament. Raised on cabriole legs terminating in well-carved ball-and-claw feet. Brass pulls and escutcheons in period style. Secondary woods visible to rear and interior. The piece exhibits excellent scale and proportion, with a commanding presence and refined decorative detail throughout. The use of crossbanding, line inlay, carved shell motifs, and ball-and-claw feet reflects the mature Georgian era and Chippendale aesthetic, combining classical symmetry with restrained ornamentation. The richly figured mahogany veneers enhance the visual depth and warmth of the façade. 85.5 in. H, 45.5 in. W, 29 in. D. Condition: Surface wear, scattered veneer stress and age marks visible. Hardware appears period but may not be original throughout and two drawers missing hardware. Structurally sound and presents well.
