Bidspirit auction | Brass Sinumbra Lamp with Cut
Brass Sinumbra Lamp with Cut and Frosted Grape Shade - A fine 19th century brass sinumbra table lamp fitted with a frosted and cut glass grape-decorated shade. The lamp features a cast brass pedestal base with foliate scroll decoration and a stepped tripod foot, rising to a circular crystal prism ring fitted with spear-point drops. The upper assembly retains its sinumbra-style configuration, designed to project light forward while shielding glare from the eyes, a highly desirable innovation of the mid-19th century. The shade is of baluster form with flared rim, executed in satin-finished glass and deeply wheel-cut with clusters of grapes, leaves, and trailing vines. The grape motif, rendered in polished clear against the frosted ground, creates a dramatic contrast when illuminated. The lower edge is encircled by a brass gallery supporting faceted crystal pendants of varying lengths, terminating in pointed prisms, adding movement and brilliance. Overall height 22 in.; shade fitter approximately 10.5 in. D. Condition: Appears in very good overall condition. Brass retains an even patina with minor surface wear consistent with age. Crystal prisms appear intact with typical minor fleabites. Shade shows no obvious cracks; minor surface wear consistent with handling and age. Electrified; wiring should be checked for safety prior to use.
