Bidspirit auction | Carved Mahogany Renaissance Revival Twin
Carved Mahogany Renaissance Revival Twin Bed - A dramatic and finely carved Renaissance Revival twin bed executed in richly toned mahogany. Each bed features an elaborate pierced and carved crest centered by scrolling acanthus foliage and a prominent hanging cluster of grapes, flanked by carved fruit and leaf swags. The crest rises to a carved urn finial and scrollwork cartouche, exhibiting deep relief carving and strong three-dimensional modeling.Below the crest is a lattice-carved panel framed by bold molded rails. The headboard is further ornamented with carved pilasters featuring foliate motifs and block capitals surmounted by turned urn finials. Burl mahogany panel is inset within molded frames, providing striking contrast to the carved architectural elements. The footboard echos the headboards in form, with shaped and molded rails, inset figured mahogany panels, and carved vertical elements. The rails are substantial and solid, providing strong structural integrity. The overall effect is richly decorative and highly architectural, characteristic of the American Renaissance Revival taste of the late 19th century, with particular emphasis on fruit-and-foliage symbolism and bold sculptural carving. 77 in.
