Victorian Rococo Revival Carved Display Cabinet, 19th Century, attr. to Alexander Roux - An imposing and richly sculptural rosewood and stained Rosewood and oak secondary Victorian Rococo Revival display cabinet, second half 19th century, executed in the French taste and strongly reminiscent of the high-style work associated with Alexander Roux of New York. The cabinet is crowned by a dramatic broken-arch crest surmounted with deeply carved floral clusters, acanthus scrolls, and a central shell motif, flanked by turned urn-form finials. The upper glazed doors are framed by flowing rococo moldings and foliate carving, opening to a shelved interior designed for prominent display. The lower case is equally bold, featuring paneled doors centered with large circular cartouches filled with dimensional floral carving, framed by pierced scrollwork and lattice-ground motifs. The frieze and base continue the exuberant carving, terminating in scrolling feet. The cabinet exhibits strong verticality and architectural massing, with a projecting cornice and shaped pilasters that reinforce its monumental presence. Constructed in dark-stained hardwood with solid plank secondary visible to the rear, the cabinet reflects quality late 19th-century craftsmanship in the French-inspired American Victorian tradition. Estate found and unmarked; offered as Rococo Revival in the manner of Alexander Roux, not attributed. 117 in. H, 63 in. W, 25 1/2 in. D Condition: Consistent with age and scale. Visible natural wood shrinkage and age cracks, particularly to rear and panels. Scattered edge wear and minor losses to carved elements, most notably at corners and base moldings. Interior shelving intact. Structurally sound and display-ready.
