Attributed A. C. Richards, Cincinnati, Rosewood Victorian Bedstead, circa 1865–1875 - An exceptional and monumental American Victorian bedstead attributed to A. C. Richards of Cincinnati, executed in richly figured rosewood and exhibiting the highest level of mid-19th-century cabinetmaking and sculptural carving. The imposing headboard rises to a crest carved with a finely modeled classical female bust flanked by deeply undercut foliate scrollwork and surmounted by an arched architectural crown centered by a carved rosette medallion. The oval headboard panel is framed by layered moldings and supported by elaborately carved uprights terminating in ornate finials with pierced and scroll-cut ornament.The massive footboard echoes the headboard’s design with an oval central reserve enclosing bold foliate carving and framed by robust, baluster-turned corner posts carved in a melon form, all resting on circular plinth feet. The side rails are similarly carved and proportioned, underscoring the bed’s architectural presence and unified design. The rosewood displays dramatic grain and warm, dark coloration throughout, consistent with premium materials favored by A. C. Richards for his most important commissions. This bed exemplifies the Rococo Revival influence prevalent in American Victorian furniture of the period, combined with the monumental scale and sculptural quality for which Richards’ Cincinnati workshop was renowned. The overall design, carving vocabulary, and construction align closely with documented Richards bedsteads and related high-style bedroom furniture produced for elite clientele in the Midwest during the post-Civil War era. 63 in.
