Bidspirit auction | American Classical Carved Mahogany Recamier,
American Classical Carved Mahogany Recamier, Philadelphia, ca. 1830–1840 - A boldly sculptural American Classical recamier attributed to the Philadelphia tradition, executed in richly figured mahogany with dramatic acanthus carving throughout. The sweeping scrolled ends terminate in tightly carved volutes with deeply cut acanthus leaves and spiral rosettes, the crest rail flowing in a graceful serpentine line from head to foot. The seat rail is edged with a carved rope molding above a shaped apron supported by robust, carved paw feet joined to scrolling leaf brackets, demonstrating confident carving and strong architectural presence. The frame displays finely figured mahogany veneers with warm, reddish-brown tone and attractive grain movement. The underside and rear construction are consistent with early 19th century American manufacture. The recamier retains custom upholstered cushions in a patterned rose textile with coordinating bolster pillows, complementing the bold classical lines. The overall form, carving vocabulary, and paw-foot treatment strongly reflect the Philadelphia school, where classical revival forms were executed with muscular carving and refined proportion. 32 in. H, 85 in. W, 22 in. D Condition: Structurally sound. Upholstery later but clean and well-fitted. Scattered minor surface wear consistent with age and use.
