Bidspirit auction | Set of Twelve American Classical
Set of Twelve American Classical Mahogany Saber-Leg Dining Chairs - A handsome and cohesive set of twelve American Classical mahogany dining chairs, including armchairs and side chairs, each exhibiting the bold yet restrained design vocabulary characteristic of the American Classical period. The chairs feature shaped saber legs, gently scrolled arms on the armchairs with distinctive circular handholds, and carved interlaced splats incorporating foliate and scroll motifs, reflecting early 19th-century American interpretations of Greco-Roman design. The frames are constructed from solid mahogany with warm, even coloration and well-proportioned profiles, offering a balanced architectural presence suitable for a formal dining setting. Seats are upholstered in a dark patterned fabric, complementing the rich tones of the wood and enhancing the visual unity of the set. The overall form favors symmetry and structural clarity, hallmarks of American Classical furniture produced during the first half of the 19th century. 35 in. H, 22 in. W, 10 in. D Condition: Overall good structural condition. Frames are sturdy and stable with no observed loose joints. The mahogany surfaces show expected minor surface wear, light scuffs, and handling marks consistent with age and use. Upholstery exhibits visible wear, including thinning, fading, and fabric stress in areas, with several seats in need of reupholstering. Upholstery condition is consistent across the set and does not detract from structural integrity.
