Federal Mahogany Press Chest or Sideboard, Early 19th Century - An impressive and oversized Federal mahogany case piece, early 19th century, of commanding architectural form and exceptional scale. The rectangular top surmounts a case fitted with two small upper drawers over a deep long drawer, above a pair of paneled cupboard doors opening to interior storage. The facade is richly figured with bold flame mahogany veneers arranged in striking bookmatched panels throughout the drawers and doors. Flanking the lower case are engaged turned columns with finely carved Ionic capitals, raised on boldly carved paw feet with acanthus-carved knees, lending the piece a strong Classical presence. The drawer fronts are sharply molded with stepped and beveled edges, retaining period-style glass pulls. The proportions, columnar supports, and substantial paw feet reflect the influence of the American Empire transition within the broader Federal tradition. 58 in. H, 51 in. W, 26 in. D. Condition: Excellent condition. Veneers vibrant and well preserved, structure solid, carving crisp, and hardware intact.
