American Classical Marble-Top Gueridon Center Table, Mid-19th Century - American Classical gueridon or center table in the French Empire taste, likely New York or Philadelphia, mid-19th century. The circular dish-top form is fitted with an inset brown marble surface above a veneered mahogany apron, raised on a bold vasiform pedestal issuing three scrolled supports carved with roundels and terminating in paw feet on casters. The strong silhouette, architectural carving, and restrained Classical ornament place the table within the American Classical tradition of the second quarter of the 19th century. 28 in. H, 38 in. diameter Condition: Marble top with surface scratches, scattered abrasions, and natural veining. Veneer loss, shrinkage cracks, and surface wear to apron and base consistent with age and use. Minor imperfections to carved elements and feet. Structurally sound and presents well.
