Large English Gentleman Portrait, Oil on Canvas, Mawson, Swan & Morgan Label Verso - A commanding oil on canvas portrait depicting a well-dressed gentleman in aristocratic attire, rendered in the English colonial taste of the 18th century. The sitter is shown three-quarter length, wearing a powdered wig and a richly appointed blue coat with elaborate gilt trim and buttons over a waistcoat, set against a softly developed landscape background. The work is presented in an impressive carved giltwood frame with floral and scrollwork ornamentation, likely 19th century. The reverse bears a partial label for Mawson, Swan & Morgan, Newcastle-on-Tyne, identified as “picture frame makers, fine art dealers and printsellers, ” indicating a later framing, handling, or sale through this noted English firm. The verso further shows later backing and mounting, suggesting the canvas has been relined or remounted. 62 in. H, 51.5 in. W, 5 in.
