Alexander Roux Carved Rococo Revival Dining Chairs (Set of Eight) - An exceptional and highly important set of eight carved dining chairs by Alexander Roux, New York, comprising six side chairs and two armchairs, executed in richly figured dark mahogany and embodying the exuberant naturalism of mid-19th century Rococo Revival design. Each chair features a distinctive oval upholstered back framed within an elaborately carved surround of fruit, foliage, and scrolling ornament, surmounted by a pierced crest centered with a bold cartouche and flanked by finely rendered birds amidst grape clusters and trailing vines. The armchairs are particularly striking, with boldly carved scrolling arms terminating in expressive animal-head handrests. The turned and carved stiles and legs terminate in casters. The chairs retain a cohesive and visually dramatic upholstery treatment in vibrant Scalamandré fabric. This model is documented in American Furniture of the 19th Century, 1840–1880 by Eileen and Richard Dubrow, where closely related examples, but none as fine and quality as this set, are illustrated. 53 in. H, 24 in. W, 23 in. D, 18 in. seat height. Condition: Structurally sound; upholstery in overall good condition with minor wear consistent with use; scattered surface wear and minor abrasions to wood; presents exceptionally well.
