Important Baltimore Classical Carved Reeded Mahogany Winged Wardrobe, Attr. to the Workshop of John - An important and architecturally imposing Baltimore Classical mahogany winged wardrobe, attributed to the workshop of John Needles (1786–1878), and dating to the second quarter of the 19th century. This monumental case form exemplifies the bold scale and refined craftsmanship associated with Baltimore’s leading cabinetmakers during the Federal and early Classical period. The wardrobe is constructed in a striking tripartite “winged” configuration, with projecting flanking towers framing a recessed central section, unified by a stepped cornice and a pedimented crest centered by a distinctive carved “egg” element. The façade is articulated with deeply reeded pilasters, finely executed and lending strong vertical emphasis to the form. The surfaces are veneered in richly figured mahogany of exceptional quality, displaying pronounced flame and bookmatched patterns throughout. The lower section comprises graduated drawers fitted with classical brass hardware, while the upper compartments open to reveal a fitted interior of shelves and hanging spaces, consistent with high-style Baltimore production. Raised on turned ball feet, the wardrobe presents with a commanding architectural presence, characteristic of the most ambitious American furniture forms of the period. A closely related example was previously handled by Stanley Weiss, New York, and illustrated as a Baltimore wardrobe attributed to John Needles, reinforcing the present example’s placement within that important cabinetmaking tradition. Provenance includes the noted Stanley Weiss Collection. 79 in. H, 87 in. W, 22 in. D. Condition: Presents well with expected age-related wear, minor veneer movement, and surface variations consistent with age and use. Structurally sound.
