Important Baltimore Classical Carved Reeded Mahogany Winged Wardrobe, Attr. to the Workshop of John - Important Baltimore Classical mahogany winged wardrobe, dating to the second quarter of the 19th century and attributed to the workshop of John Needles, closely aligned in form, scale, and construction with the preceding lot. This imposing architectural case exhibits the characteristic tripartite “winged” configuration associated with Baltimore’s most ambitious cabinetmaking, featuring projecting side towers flanking a recessed central section beneath a stepped cornice and pedimented crest with central rounded element. The façade is articulated with bold reeded pilasters and veneered in richly figured mahogany, displaying deep color and pronounced flame patterning throughout. The central compartment opens to reveal fitted shelving, while the flanking sections provide hanging storage. The lower case is fitted with graduated drawers retaining classical brass ring pulls. The wardrobe is raised on turned ball feet, consistent with documented Baltimore construction of the period. The present example corresponds closely in design and execution to the preceding wardrobe, and together they represent a rare survival of this monumental Baltimore form. Wardrobes of this scale were seldom preserved in multiples due to their size and the practical challenges of relocation, making closely related examples of particular note. 79 in. H, 87 in. W, 22 in. D. Condition: Presents well with expected wear, including surface variations, age-related finish softness, and minor veneer movement. Interior retains functional configuration. Structurally sound.
