Monumental French Neoclassical Style Giltwood Mirror with Figural Supports - An impressive and highly decorative monumental mirror in the French Neoclassical taste, richly carved and finished in gilt and polychrome accents. The architectural form features a heavy entablature with egg-and-dart, dentil, and foliate moldings above a frieze centered with scrolling ornament. The uprights are formed as engaged columns incorporating finely carved figural supports in the manner of mythological satyrs or fauns, each draped with fruit-laden garlands and classical motifs. The base is further adorned with a cartouche bearing the Latin inscription NOSCE TE IPSUM, or Know Thyself, flanked by stylized scrollwork. 91 in. H, 81 in. W, 17 in. D Condition: Surface wear to gilt and painted decoration with areas of rubbing and loss consistent with age; minor scattered chips and abrasions to carved elements; mirror plate with light surface wear and spotting; structurally sound and displays exceptionally well.
