Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Horse and Rider Figure (618–907) - A Chinese pottery equestrian figure attributed to the Tang dynasty, modeled as a caparisoned horse standing foursquare on an integral base and bearing a mounted rider. The figure is sensitively rendered, with the horse displaying a strong, naturalistic stance and defined musculature, while the rider is depicted upright with hands positioned as if holding reins, wearing a rounded cap and long tunic. The surface retains extensive earthen encrustation with traces of original pigment, consistent with burial and age. Figures of this type were produced as mingqi (tomb objects). Accompanied by a Hong Kong Art Craft Merchants Association Certificate of Antiquity dated August 29, 2000 (Certificate No. A110033), identifying the work as Tang dynasty (A.D. 618–907). Such certificates, issued in Hong Kong during the late 20th century, reflect period commercial authentication practices and accompany the present example as part of its documented history.14 in.
