American Country Sheraton Faux-Grained Sugar Desk, Southern, Early 19th Century - A scarce American country Sheraton sugar desk-form chest, Southern: Kentucky or Tennessee region, early 19th century, retaining an old faux-grained painted surface with yellow ochre line decoration simulating inlay. The rectangular case is fitted with a hinged slant lid opening to a deep storage well, with an upright rear gallery or backboard, iron hinges, and iron hasp/lock fitting, raised on four ring-turned legs with painted banding. The case is constructed with dovetailed side joints and early secondary woods, the interior showing honest oxidation, wear, and use. A highly unusual small-form country painted storage piece with strong visual relationship to Southern sugar desks, sugar tables, and related dry-goods storage furniture. 33.5 in. H, 22.5 in. W, 17.5 in. D. Condition: Overall good antique condition with expected wear, abrasions, scratches, oxidation, shrinkage, surface grime, and scattered losses to painted decoration. Interior divider(s) originally present are absent. Hinges and hasp appear early, with evidence of use, wear, and possible old repairs. Surface appears old, possibly original or early, with later varnish or clear coating possible.
