Monumental Oil on Canvas After Rubens, The Abduction of the Daughters of Leucippus, 19th C. - Continental School, 19th century, after Peter Paul Rubens, monumental oil on canvas depicting The Abduction of the Daughters of Leucippus, the dramatic mythological scene of Castor and Pollux carrying off Phoebe and Hilaeira, daughters of Leucippus. The original composition, painted circa 1618 by Rubens with landscape by Jan Wildens, is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. This version captures the turbulent Baroque arrangement of rearing horses, twisting nude figures, and dynamic movement associated with the celebrated Rubens original. Presented in a substantial giltwood and composition architectural frame with fluted side pilasters and richly ornamented molded crest. Provenance: formerly from the interior collection of Pippen?s, a long-time Natchez, Mississippi antiques dealer. 70 in. H, 63 in. W, 4 in. D. Condition: Scattered surface grime, craquelure, varnish discoloration, stretcher marks, and age-related wear.
