American Classical Carved Mahogany Two-Drawer Work Table / Stand, New York or Philadelphia, c. - A handsome American Classical carved mahogany two-drawer work table or stand, circa 1820?1840, likely New York or Philadelphia. The rectangular top with molded edge is set above a conforming case fitted with two long drawers having highly figured mahogany veneered convex fronts and brass rosette pulls, flanked by boldly carved acanthus half-columns. The case is raised on a carved urn-form pedestal support continuing to a quadripartite base with deeply carved acanthus knees, saber legs, hairy paw feet, and brass casters. Secondary woods appear to include yellow pine or poplar. 28 in. H, 19.5 in. W, 17.5 in. D. Condition: Good overall antique condition with expected age and use wear, scattered surface scratches, minor finish wear, and small abrasions to edges and high points of carving. Some veneer and case wear. Drawer construction and dovetailing visible; drawer interiors show age-appropriate wear. Brass pulls and casters present.
