Important Philadelphia Mahogany Secretary Bookcase, circa 1780 - An important Philadelphia mahogany secretary bookcase, circa 1780-1800, in two parts, the upper case with molded cornice and dentil course above a pair of glazed doors with geometric mullions opening to a shelved interior. The lower case is fitted with four graduated long drawers retaining handsome pierced brass pulls and escutcheons, flanked by distinctive reeded quarter columns terminating above the molded base, raised on shaped bracket feet. The top drawer opens to reveal a fitted secretary interior with green baize writing slide, divided side compartments, and removable storage box. The piece displays fine architectural proportion, striking mahogany surface, and sophisticated late 18th-century cabinetmaking. 79.5 in. H, 40.5 in. W, 22 in. D. Condition: Good overall presentation with expected wear, shrinkage, scattered finish wear, age cracks, and abrasions consistent with age and use.
