Natchez, Mississippi Plantation Cypress Locking Cabinet, Attr. to Enslaved Craftsmen, 19th Century - Large Natchez, Mississippi plantation cypress locking cabinet, 19th century, attributed by provenance to construction by enslaved craftsmen. The imposing vernacular cabinet is constructed of broad cypress boards with a projecting molded cornice, paneled double doors, vertical board back, shelved interior, shaped lower skirt, and original-style iron locking hardware, including a long exterior iron locking bar and key. The cabinet retains a dry, scrubbed, weathered surface with traces of old finish. 96 in. H, 51.5 in. W, 18 in. D. Condition: Structurally standing with age-appropriate wear, surface losses, abrasions, staining, oxidation to iron hardware, old white residue or traces of former surface, separations and shrinkage consistent with age and plank construction. Interior shelves and locking hardware present.
