American School, Portrait of a Gentleman, C. 1830 - Oil on canvas, American School, likely New York or Northeastern United States, circa 1830?1840, depicting a seated gentleman in black coat, high collar, yellow waistcoat, black cravat, and jeweled stickpin, posed against a warm neutral ground with red upholstered chair back visible at right. Housed in an ebonized molded frame with gilt liner. Later backing board/support present. 30.5 in. H x 22.5 in. W x 2 in. D. Condition: Surface craquelure, varnish discoloration, minor frame wear, later backing/support; not examined out of frame.
