Mahogany Basilica Birdcage on Stand - Origin: Probably Southeast Asian manufacture Date: 20th century Period/Style: Victorian style / Gothic Revival style Materials: Mahogany or similar tropical hardwood, metal wire, and metal fittings Form: Architectural birdcage on stand Description: A monumental Victorian-style architectural birdcage on its conforming stand, modeled after the domed Basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, Paris. The elaborate cage is constructed as a multi-tiered ecclesiastical pavilion with pitched roofs, arched entrances, columnar supports, balustrades, clustered towers, and a large wirework dome surmounted by a soaring spire. The square lower platform contains a removable sliding cleaning tray. Raised on a separate fitted stand with shaped aprons, tapered legs, and intersecting stretchers centered by a circular platform. Dimensions: 71 in. H; 21 in. W; 21 in. D. The metal cage wires exhibit scattered oxidation, bending, and surface wear. Minor looseness, separations, small losses among the numerous delicate architectural elements and projecting finials.
