Victorian Carved Mahogany Torchere - Origin: Probably England Date: Circa 1860-1880 Period/Style: English Victorian Materials: Mahogany Form: Torchere, jardiniere stand, or display pedestal Description: A finely carved English Victorian mahogany torchere or jardiniere pedestal, circa 1860-1880. The shallow circular dished top with molded rim stands above a gadrooned collar and exceptionally long spiral-carved shaft. Deeply carved acanthus leaves, layered foliate panels, beadwork, and multiple turned collars enrich the lower pedestal. Three graceful downswept legs form the tripod base and terminate in boldly scrolled feet. Its unusual height and extensive carving distinguish it from the more commonly encountered plain turned plant stands. Dimensions: 56.5 in. H, 17 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished, likely refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, darkening, and color variation. The dished top has concentrated water staining, circular marks, surface scratches, finish loss, and uneven sheen consistent with use as a plant or display stand. Carved areas have rubbing, accumulated residue, small edge nicks, and minor losses. Legs and feet exhibit surface wear and small shrinkage separations.
