B&H Soldat Spartiate Oil Lamp - Maker: Attributed to Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company Sculptural Model: After Jean-Pierre Cortot (French, 1787-1843) Origin: Probably Meriden, Connecticut Date: Circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: American Victorian, Neoclassical Revival Materials: Gilt and polychromed cast metal, brass, milk glass, and clear glass Form: Figural oil lamp Description: An elaborate American Victorian figural oil lamp attributed to Bradley & Hubbard. The cast base depicts a reclining classical warrior holding aloft a richly ornamented floral font, fitted with a white milk-glass shade molded with roses and a flared scalloped rim. Retains a clear glass chimney and burner assembly. The base is cast SOLDAT SPARTIATE, identifying the figure by its traditional title, although the sculptural model is Jean-Pierre Cortot's Soldier of Marathon Announcing Victory. Near pair to Lot 8. Mark: Cast SOLDAT SPARTIATE along the front edge of the base. Dimensions: 32 in. H, 16 in. W, 13 in. D.
