Renaissance Revival Carved Rosewood High-Back Chair, Attr. to Alexander Roux - Maker: Attributed to Alexander Roux (French-American, 1813-1886) Origin: New York, New York Date: Circa 1860-1875 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival Materials: Rosewood, secondary woods, red velvet upholstery, and metal casters Form: High-back side chair / parlor chair Description: An elaborately carved rosewood high-back side chair, the pierced back centered by fruiting grapevines and scrolling foliage within architectural stiles and surmounted by a floral and scroll-carved crest. The later red velvet seat rises above a carved seat rail and pierced scrolling front stretcher, on turned legs ending in casters. No maker's label or mark has been observed; the attribution is based upon its design, materials, and carving vocabulary. Dimensions: 45 in. H; 20 in. W; 19 in. D; seat height 16 in.
