Louis XV-Style Figured Maple Pedestal - Origin: Continental, probably France Date: Late 19th early 20th century Period/Style: Louis XV Revival, Belle Epoque Materials: Figured maple or birch veneer, gilt metal, and green-veined marble. Form: Display pedestal or sculpture stand Description: A tall Continental Louis XV Revival display pedestal, probably French, veneered in richly figured bird's-eye maple or birch. The beveled octagonal green marble top rests above a tapering, paneled shaft outlined with twisted gilt-metal borders and mounted at the angles with putto-form terms. The bombe base is extensively ornamented with gilt-metal foliate flourishes, figural and floral basket plaques, and rocaille mounts. Four short cabriole legs terminate in acanthus-cast metal sabots. Dimensions: 49.5 in. H, 19 in. Dia. Condition: Presents well with pronounced sun fading and color variation to one side. Scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, minor veneer cracks or edge losses, and age-related joint movement are present. The marble top exhibits natural veining, surface wear, and minor edge abrasions or chips. Gilt-metal mounts display tarnish, oxidation, and scattered rubbing. Some mounts may have been resecured.
