English Papier-Mache Mother-of-Pearl Table - Origin: England, probably Birmingham Date: Circa 1850-1870 Period/Style: Victorian Materials: Black-lacquered papier-mache, ebonized wood, mother-of-pearl, polychrome decoration, gilding, and metal hardware Form: Tilt-top occasional table Description: A finely decorated English Victorian papier-mache tilt-top occasional table, probably produced in Birmingham. The scalloped black-lacquered top is centered by a colorful painted floral bouquet surrounded by dense mother-of-pearl arabesques, gilt scrollwork, and patterned borders. The top tilts above a turned and baluster-form ebonized standard decorated with gilt and colored ornament, rising from a circular stepped and domed base. The elaborate pearl work produces the iridescent effect prized in mid-19th-century Birmingham papier-mache furniture. Dimensions: 41 in. H overall with top raised. Top: 23 in. W, 23 in. D. Condition: Presents very well overall with scattered surface scratches, lacquer crazing, rubbing and localized losses to the gilding, and small areas of mother-of-pearl loss or lifting. Minor chips and abrasions are visible around the scalloped edge. A vertical age-related crack is visible in the upper portion of the standard.
