American Classical Mahogany Bedstep Commode - Origin: Probably American Date: Circa 1835-1845 Period/Style: American Late Classical Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, unidentified secondary woods, leather, brass hardware, and glazed earthenware Form: Bedstep commode Description: A fine and uncommon American Late Classical mahogany bedstep commode, circa 1835-1845. The rectangular hinged lid is inset with burgundy leather bordered in gilt tooling and opens on brass stays to a fitted compartment containing a removable cream-glazed earthenware liner. The boldly serpentine front is veneered in richly figured mahogany above a concealed pull-out step with a matching leather tread. The step, apron, and front legs move as a single assembly. Ring-turned feet and restrained moldings. Dimensions: 20 in. H, 23 in. W, 17.5 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished, likely refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, color variation, and minor shrinkage. The figured front exhibits veneer cracking, particularly near the lower right case junction. Leather panels have rubbing, scratches, fading, surface wear, and loss to the gilt borders.
