American Classical Gilt-Stenciled Pier Table - Origin: Probably New York Date: Circa 1820-1835 Period/Style: American Classical Materials: Wood with ebonized and gilt-painted surface, carved and molded gilt ornament Form: Pier or console table Description: An unusually decorative American Classical pier or console table in the New York gilt-stenciled tradition. The rectangular top with rounded front corners rises above a frieze centered by a fruit-and-flower still life and foliate side ornaments. Two freestanding cylindrical columns with carved gilt acanthus collars support an incurved lower shelf, raised on boldly carved gilt acanthus returns and animal-paw feet with plain rear supports.
