Pair Clark Coit & Cargill Argand Lamps - Origin: New York, New York Date: Circa 1840-1845 Period/Style: Late American Classical Materials: Gilt brass and bronze, frosted and engraved glass, cut-glass prisms, and electrical fittings Description: A fine matched pair of American Classical single-light Argand lamps retailed by Clark, Coit & Cargill of New York. Each covered vase-form oil reservoir rises above a richly cast acanthus standard and square plinth supported by foliate paw feet. A lateral arm carries a frosted glass shade wheel-engraved with grape clusters and leafy vines. Graduated cut-glass prisms encircle both the reservoir and shade gallery. The original oil lamps have been adapted for electricity. Marks: Each burner collar stamped CLARK, COIT & CARGILL / NEW YORK. Dimensions: 17.5 in. H, 11 in. W, 6 in. D, each. Condition: Present very well with age-appropriate tarnish, oxidation, finish variation, surface wear, and old polish residue to the metalwork. The lamps have been converted from oil to electricity with later sockets and wiring. The frosted and engraved shades are period in character. Several prisms and suspension wires appear to be replacements, with a few prisms missing. Scattered minor chips and edge abrasions may be present among the numerous cut-glass drops.
