Austrian Camel and Palm Tree Lamp - Origin: Austria, probably Vienna Date: Early 20th century, circa 1900-1920 Period/Style: Austrian Orientalist Materials: Cold-painted cast metal, sheet metal, and electrical fittings Form: Figural two-light table lamp Description: An Austrian Orientalist cold-painted figural table lamp depicting a North African or Middle Eastern camel rider resting beneath a tall palm tree. The camel is modeled with an elaborately patterned saddle blanket, tassels, and reins, while the turbaned rider carries a long rifle. The naturalistically modeled ground supports a tall textured trunk beneath a spreading canopy of individually formed palm fronds concealing two horizontal light sockets. Retaining remnants of the original polychrome decoration in red, gold, cream, green, and brown. The underside is cast with the word AUSTRIA. No Bergman foundry mark or other maker's signature has been observed. Dimensions: 22 in. H; 12 in. W; 7 in. D. Condition: Age-related surface wear with oxidation, tarnish, scratches, abrasions, accumulated soiling, and substantial rubbing and losses to the cold-painted decoration. Palm fronds exhibit scattered bending and should be examined for possible minor repairs or losses. Electrical sockets, pull chains, cord, and wiring appear old or replaced and have not been tested.
