Swiss Cylinder Music Box on Stand - Origin: Switzerland Date: Circa 1875-1890 Period/Style: Late Victorian Materials: Burl walnut and figured wood veneers, contrasting line inlay, ebonized wood, brass, steel, glass, paper, and six interchangeable pinned metal cylinders Form: Interchangeable-cylinder music box on matching stand Description: Fine late-19th-century Swiss interchangeable-cylinder music box on its purpose-built matching table. The burl-veneered case has contrasting banding, ebonized moldings, cast side handles, and a hinged lid enclosing a glass-protected brass and steel movement with jeweled governor. The original manuscript tune sheet enumerates six cylinders, each programmed with six airs, providing a repertory of 36 selections. The complete set of six cylinders survives, with one installed and five housed in the fitted storage drawer of the matching inlaid stand. Marks: Manuscript tune sheet inscribed No. 26264, with additional handwritten numerals appearing to read 3202 and 509. Movement bedplate stamped C. Dimensions: 36 in. H, 41 in. W, 26 in. D. Condition: Music box was observed to wind, operate, and play with the installed cylinder at the time of cataloging. Five additional interchangeable cylinders are retained in the fitted storage drawer. The spare cylinders and all 36 individual airs have not been independently tested. Case and stand exhibit scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, and veneer cracks, particularly around the table edges and apron. Ebonized moldings have rubbing and edge wear. Movement and cylinders show tarnish and oxidation. Tune sheet has toning, foxing, and staining. Glass movement cover intact. Comb teeth and mechanical components have not been exhaustively examined.
