Large Porcelain Figural Floral Parlor Lamp - Maker: Unidentified Continental porcelain manufacture; burner marked Made in America Origin: Probably Germany; assembled or fitted in the United States Date: Late 19th to early 20th century Period/Style: Rococo Revival / Dresden style Materials: Polychrome porcelain, brass, painted glass, and lamp fittings Form: Figural parlor oil lamp, later electrified Description: A monumental Continental porcelain and brass parlor lamp, probably German, executed in the Dresden or Rococo Revival taste. The sculptural porcelain body centers a finely modeled young woman in period dress standing amid profuse applied blossoms, leaves, and naturalistic groundwork. The baluster-form reservoir and spreading base are decorated with floral garlands and colored marbleized veining against a cream ground. Surmounted by an ornate brass oil-burner assembly and a spherical painted glass shade decorated with a corresponding female figure and floral sprays. The burner is marked Made in America, indicating an American-made component but not necessarily the origin or maker of the porcelain body. The lamp was later electrified. Dimensions: 33 in. Condition: Overall age-related surface wear, accumulated soiling, glaze imperfections, and scattered discoloration. The numerous applied porcelain flowers and leaves exhibit chips, flakes, and small losses, with additional minor restorations or losses possible within the dense decoration. Brass components exhibit tarnish, oxidation, and finish wear. The painted glass shade appears stylistically coordinated with the porcelain body, but its originality to the lamp has not been conclusively established. The American-marked burner may be original to the lamp's initial assembly or a later replacement. Later electrification is present; the wiring and electrical fittings are untested.
