NY Classical Stenciled Piano Stool - Origin: New York, New York Date: Circa 1825-1830 Period/Style: American Classical Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, unidentified secondary woods, gilt stencil decoration, and later striped upholstery Form: Adjustable piano or harp stool with back Description: A fine New York Classical carved mahogany piano stool, circa 1825-1830. The scroll-ended back has a figured mahogany crest rail above a pierced and carved foliate stay rail. Its trapezoidal upholstered seat is supported by a boldly ring-turned adjustable pedestal above a tripod base. Deeply carved acanthus leaves and volutes ornament the scrolling legs, while a surviving gilt-stenciled anthemion decorates the central pedestal block. The back, extensive carving, and stencil decoration distinguish this example from the more common backless piano stool. Dimensions: 29 in. H, 17 in. W, 14 in. D, 20 in. seat H.
