Salem Federal Mahogany Sofa, Possibly Hook - Maker: Salem School, possibly by William Hook Origin: Salem, Massachusetts Date: Circa 1805-1815 Period/Style: Federal, Sheraton Materials: Mahogany, figured maple or birch veneer, unidentified secondary woods, brass casters, and later fine woven upholstery Form: Eight-leg Federal sofa Description: A fine Salem, Massachusetts, Federal mahogany sofa, circa 1805-1815. The long upholstered back terminates in deep ovolo wings beneath molded mahogany rails descending into graceful scrolled hand grips. Finely reeded vase-form arm supports rise above rectangular stiles veneered in boldly figured maple or birch. The generous seat is supported by four ring-turned and reeded front legs with brass casters and four raked square rear legs. Excellent later blue-green and gold striped upholstery complements the exceptionally refined frame. The sofa relates closely to a small group of sophisticated Salem seating furniture associated with cabinetmaker William Hook, including examples with comparable downsloping arms, swelled reeded supports, figured lightwood panels, and reeded legs. Condition: Retains an old polished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, darkening, and minor color variation.
