The long upholstered back terminates in deep ovolo wings beneath molded mahogany rails descending into graceful scrolled hand grips. Finely reeded vase-form arm supports rise above rectangular stiles veneered in boldly figured maple or birch. The generous seat is supported by four ring-turned and reeded front legs with brass casters and four raked square rear legs. Excellent later blue-green and gold striped upholstery complements the exceptionally refined frame. The sofa relates closely to a small group of sophisticated Salem seating furniture associated with cabinetmaker William Hook, including examples with comparable downsloping arms, swelled reeded supports, figured lightwood panels, and reeded legs.
