New York Classical Rosewood Bureau - Origin: Probably New York Date: Circa 1825-1840 Period/Style: American Classical Materials: Rosewood and rosewood veneer, ebonized and gilt-stenciled wood, gilt-metal mounts, black-painted wood pulls, and unidentified softwood secondary woods Form: Chest of drawers or dressing bureau with gallery Description: A distinctive New York Classical rosewood dressing bureau with an apparently original raised gallery. The rectangular top rests above a projecting ebonized cushion-form drawer decorated with a gilt-stenciled hunting trophy beneath grapevines. Four graduated rosewood-veneered drawers are flanked by ebonized cylindrical columns with gilt-stenciled fruiting vines and gilt-metal capitals and bases. The richly striped rosewood veneers, contrasting black ornament, boldly turned feet, and raised gallery reflect New York decorative practice of the 1820s and 1830s. Dimensions: 54 in. H; 47 in. W; 21 in. D. Condition: Retains an old refinished surface with scattered veneer repairs, shrinkage, scratches, edge wear, and areas of color and finish restoration. The ebonized surfaces exhibit craquelure, rubbing, and localized losses, particularly across the cushion-form upper drawer. Gilt stenciling is worn and appears retouched or refreshed in areas.
