Four figures and a dog occupy a long, flat-bottomed boat among tall reeds, with wooded banks, distant hills, and a softly illuminated evening sky receding beyond. The expansive composition, atmospheric distance, quiet narrative detail, and restrained luminist palette reflect the influence of the Hudson River School. Unsigned and presented in a period giltwood and composition frame. Dimensions: 25.5 in. H, 33 in. W, framed. Condition: Presents attractively but exhibits extensive allover craquelure, pronounced stretcher-bar impressions, surface grime, scattered abrasions, and several small areas of paint loss. Areas of the paint film may be lifting. Possible old retouching or restoration cannot be excluded. The canvas appears unlined, with no obvious major tear visible. The frame exhibits age-related rubbing, gilt loss, abrasions, cracking, and scattered small losses. Not examined under ultraviolet light. Dimensions: 25.5 x 33 in
