Philadelphia Classical Mahogany Recamier - Origin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Date: Circa 1825-1840 Period/Style: American Classical Materials: Mahogany and figured mahogany veneer with later damask upholstery Form: Double-ended recamier Description: A large-scale Philadelphia American Classical mahogany recamier with an asymmetrical serpentine back and outward-scrolling ends. Each end incorporates an upholstered bolster fronted by a deeply carved floral rosette, while additional rosettes terminate the exposed crest rail. The figured mahogany seat rail is flanked by boldly carved acanthus-and-scroll brackets continuing into four animal-paw feet. The unusually generous 87-inch length, sculptural carving, and double-ended Grecian form distinguish this example from more restrained Classical examples. Dimensions: 33 in. H, 87 in. W, 24 in. D.
