Federal Mahogany Bureau, North Shore, Mass. - Origin: North Shore, Massachusetts Date: Circa 1800-1815 Period/Style: Late Federal Materials: Mahogany and mahogany veneer, pine and other secondary woods, brass escutcheons, and wood pulls Form: Bow-front chest of drawers with dressing tier and shaped splash board Description: A distinctive North Shore Massachusetts late Federal mahogany bureau with a scroll-ended splash board above a set-back dressing tier containing two short drawers. The conforming bow-front case is fitted with four graduated cockbeaded drawers displaying richly figured mahogany veneers. Full-height corner posts combine ring turning with spiral or rope carving and continue into slender turned feet. The upper tier, splash board, and case exhibit coherent period construction and appear to have been conceived as a unified form. Dimensions: 49.5 in. H, 39 in. W, 18 in. D.
