Fine American Classical Mahogany Secretary - Origin: Probably New York State Date: Circa 1825-1840 Period/Style: American Classical, Late Neoclassical Materials: Mahogany and highly figured mahogany veneer, mixed secondary woods, and brass hardware Form: Slant-front secretary desk Description: Fine American Classical mahogany slant-front secretary, probably New York State, circa 1825-1840. The rectangular case is veneered throughout with carefully selected and book-matched figured mahogany. The hinged writing fall opens to a finely finished interior incorporating three small mahogany drawers, valanced pigeonholes, and locking document compartments. Two short drawers and two bowed long drawers are flanked by deeply carved acanthus-and-reed pilasters terminating in animal-paw feet fitted with casters. Retains period brass bail pulls, escutcheons, locks, and key, which appear original. Dimensions: 43 in. H, 42.25 in. W, 20 in. D.
