NY Classical Gothic Mahogany Sideboard - Origin: Probably New York Date: Circa 1835-1845 Period/Style: Late American Classical with Gothic Revival ornament Materials: Mahogany and figured mahogany veneer, variegated white marble and brass Form: Marble-top sideboard or serving cabinet Description: A substantial probable New York late Classical mahogany sideboard incorporating early Gothic Revival ornament. The variegated white marble top surmounts one long drawer flanked by two short drawers and carved quatrefoil panels. Ionic columns frame a two-door cabinet with boldly molded pointed-arch panels, while corresponding Gothic lancet panels decorate the outer stiles. Richly figured mahogany veneers and large carved lion-paw front feet preserve the architectural weight of the American Classical tradition while the quatrefoils and arches anticipate the emerging Gothic Revival. Dimensions: 43.5 in. H, 56 in. W, 23.75 in. D. Condition: Retains an older cleaned or repolished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, shrinkage, veneer cracking, separations, and old repairs. A prominent vertical veneer crack and localized loss or repair are visible near the upper-right corner of the case. Additional wear is present to the drawer edges, cabinet interior, and carved feet.
