Rococo Revival Rosewood Dressing Table Attributed to Alexander Roux - Maker: Attributed to Alexander Roux (1813-1886) Origin: New York, New York Date: Circa 1860 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Rosewood and rosewood veneer, secondary woods, mirror glass, and metal hardware Form: Dressing table with adjustable mirror Description: New York Rococo Revival rosewood dressing table with mirror, circa 1860, attributed to Alexander Roux. The serpentine case contains three conforming drawers above cabriole legs carved with flowers, foliage, and scrollwork. A shaped superstructure fitted with two small drawers supports an adjustable mirror within a deeply molded frame, flanked by bold C-scrolls and surmounted by a pierced floral and foliate crest. Hand-cut dovetail construction, richly modeled carving, dark rosewood, and French-derived profiles support the attribution; no maker label or stamp was observed. Dimensions: 71 in. H, 42 in. W, 25 in. D. The dark surface exhibits scratches, scuffs, abrasions, finish loss, and areas of clouding. The top has shrinkage separations, splits, patches, edge losses, and repaired areas. Open joints, old repairs, and likely replaced or later fasteners at the mirror supports. Mirror plate with pronounced silvering loss, haze, spotting, and scratches; backing with age splits.
