Rare Compact Renaissance Revival Marble-Top Side Table, Attr. to Thomas Brooks - Maker: Attributed to Thomas Brooks (1811-1887) Origin: Brooklyn, New York Date: Circa 1865-1875 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival Materials: Walnut, secondary woods, and white marble Form: Marble-top side or parlor table Description: Compact American Renaissance Revival walnut and marble-top parlor table, circa 1865-1875, attributed to Thomas Brooks of Brooklyn, New York. The circular white marble top rests upon a molded frieze carved with elongated reserves and button ornament. The unusually substantial open base incorporates a turned central standard surrounded by four architectural scroll supports embellished with pierced foliate carving and applied graduated ball ornaments. Four outswept legs terminate in distinctive carved horse-hoof feet. The dense construction and diminutive scale distinguish the table from the generally larger center-table forms associated with Brooks. Dimensions: 28.5 in. H, 28 in. W, 28 in. D. The segmented circular frame beneath the top has shrinkage cracks, open joints, and separations, with scattered old repairs and later or replaced screws. The broad underside support exhibits abrasions, old mounting holes, edge losses, and evidence of prior adjustment. Later protective felt pads are attached beneath the hoof feet.
