Victorian Eastlake Walnut and Burl Secretary Desk - Origin: American Date: Circa 1880-1890 Period/Style: Victorian, Eastlake and Aesthetic Movement Materials: Black walnut, burl walnut veneer, ebonized wood, unidentified secondary woods, metal hardware, and green felt Form: Diminutive fall-front secretary desk Description: A fine diminutive American Victorian Eastlake secretary desk, circa 1880-1890, crafted in walnut with richly figured burl walnut panels and contrasting ebonized moldings. The shaped and incised gallery incorporates an open display shelf supported by scrolling standards with applied rosettes. A paneled fall front opens to a green felt writing surface and an unusually complete fitted interior of valanced pigeonholes, open compartments, and four small drawers. Below are a full-width drawer and double-door cabinet, all enriched with incised ornament, carved details, and burl panels. Dimensions: 65 in. H, 27 in. W, 19 in. D.
