Bidspirit auction | Marked Carved Walnut Figural Center

Marked Carved Walnut Figural Center Table - Maker: Unidentified; bears an unresolved inked W/VV-over-BB or crowned-BB device Origin: Probably American Date: Circa 1920-1940 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival with Rococo-inspired ornament Materials: Walnut and walnut veneer, unidentified secondary wood, and brass casters Form: Figural center table Description: A monumental carved walnut center table in the French Renaissance Revival taste. The serpentine and lobed walnut top has a molded conforming edge above a deeply shaped apron carved on all sides with roses, flowering branches, fruit, scrollwork, and pendant foliage. Four sculptural female terms with raised arms support the apron and transition into boldly scrolling legs terminating on brass casters. Pierced serpentine stretchers converge on a central urn surmounted by a densely carved basket of flowers. The generous scale, four fully modeled figural supports, and continuous all-around carving give the table considerable presence as a center-room form. Mark: The underside bears an unidentified black inked device resembling a W or paired V's above two B-form characters, possibly a crowned-BB emblem. The mark has not been tied to a documented maker and is not presently interpreted as proof of ownership or manufacture. Dimensions: 30 in. H, 57 in. W, 41 in. D.
