Kentucky Cherry Sugar Chest - Origin: Probably Kentucky Date: Circa 1825-1840 Period/Style: Southern Federal Materials: Cherry primary wood and metal hardware Form: Divided sugar chest Description: A fine Kentucky cherry sugar chest of compact rectangular form. The molded top incorporates a hinged forward section opening to a deep, two-part storage well retaining its apparently original central divider. The post-and-panel case features a particularly broad cherry front board with warm, expressive grain. Square corner stiles continue into boldly stacked-ring turned legs terminating in rounded feet. The chest's restrained architecture, sculptural turnings, unusually intact interior, and Kentucky estate provenance distinguish this handsome example of early Southern cabinetmaking. Condition: Retains an old refinished surface with warm color. Age-appropriate scratches, abrasions, stains, finish variation, small edge losses, shrinkage, and several checks or separations to the broad case boards and top. The front panel exhibits a long age-related diagonal check. Scattered old nail or fastener holes are visible along the molded top edge. The central interior divider original and exhibits wear consistent with the surrounding well. Hinges and lock appear period in character, although originality and function have not been confirmed.
