Carved Oak Hunt Tantalus on Stand - Origin: France Date: Late 19th century, circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival / Black Forest taste Materials: Carved oak, secondary woods, engraved and gilt glass, and brass hardware Form: Cave a liqueur or tantalus cabinet on stand Description: A monumental French carved-oak cave a liqueur or tantalus cabinet on its original fitted stand, executed in the Renaissance Revival manner with elaborate hunting imagery associated with the Black Forest taste. The hinged lid is surmounted by a fully modeled wild boar caught in a sprung iron trap, above a deeply carved landscape panel depicting a pack of hounds in pursuit of game before a distant castle. The side panels are centered by projecting hounds' heads within incised foliate cartouches, while fluted and foliate-carved colonnettes articulate the corners. A carved monogram escutcheon is mounted beneath the lid. The lid opens on brass supports to reveal a removable tiered wooden carrier retaining a complete matching gilt and engraved glass service comprising four (4) stoppered decanters and sixteen (16) cordial glasses. The cabinet rests upon an architectural oak stand with a shaped molded top, carved frieze drawer, turned and carved legs, and a curvilinear stretcher centered by a turned finial. No maker's mark has been observed. Dimensions: 51 in. H; 30 in. W; 24 in. D. Condition: Very good overall antique condition with age-related scratches, abrasions, minor finish wear, scattered shrinkage separations, and small losses or repairs possible among the extensive carved decoration. Brass hinges and lid supports exhibit oxidation and surface wear. The fitted wooden carrier has scattered scratches and finish wear. The four decanters and twelve cordial glasses intact and matching, with scattered wear and minor losses to the gilt decoration. The cabinet and stand are associated as an original ensemble.
