American Rococo Gilt Pier Mirror and Stand - Origin: American Date: Circa 1860-1870 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Carved wood with gesso and molded composition ornament, early gold-leaf gilding, white marble, mirror glass, and pine backing boards Form: Pier mirror with marble-top console stand Description: Fine American Rococo Revival gilt pier mirror and matching marble-top stand, circa 1860-1870. The tall arched mirror plate is enclosed by molded, beaded, and rope-twist borders beneath an elaborate pierced crest composed of opposing C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, rocaille, and floral cartouches. A conforming white marble shelf rests above a shallow gilt apron centered by a cabochon and foliate medallion. Sweeping supports descend to scrolling feet and are joined by a pierced stretcher centered by a matching floral cartouche. Marks: An old handwritten ownership label is affixed to the reverse, wording partially illegible. Dimensions: 101 in. H, 36 in. W, 12.5 in. D. Condition: Retains substantial early gold-leaf gilding with attractive age-related tonal variation, rubbing, darkening, localized retouching, and scattered losses exposing the underlying gesso. Expected shrinkage cracks, small chips, separations, and old repairs are present throughout the delicate carved and molded ornament. Marble has scattered scratches, staining, and edge wear.
